EV Efficiency Converter: kWh/100 km, Wh/mi, mi/kWh, MPGe
Enter one EV efficiency figure in any unit and see it in all the others, metric and U.S.
How it works
Everything is converted through kWh per 100 miles. 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly (NIST), so kWh/100 km = kWh/100 mi ÷ 1.609344. Wh/mi = kWh/100 mi × 10. mi/kWh = 100 ÷ kWh/100 mi; km/kWh = mi/kWh × 1.609344. MPGe = 3,370.5 ÷ kWh/100 mi (EPA's 33.705 kWh per gallon). Le/100 km = kWh/100 km ÷ 8.9 (Natural Resources Canada: one litre of gasoline is equivalent to 8.9 kWh).
Worked example: 30 kWh/100 mi = 30 ÷ 1.609344 = 18.64 kWh/100 km = 300 Wh/mi = 186.4 Wh/km = 3.33 mi/kWh = 5.36 km/kWh = 112.35 MPGe = 18.64 ÷ 8.9 = 2.09 Le/100 km.
Assumptions
- Pure unit conversion. It does not change how efficient a car is or predict real-world use.
- MPGe uses EPA's 33.705 kWh per U.S. gallon; Le/100 km uses NRCan's 8.9 kWh per litre. The two factors are rounded differently (33.705 ÷ 3.785412 L per gallon = 8.904 kWh per litre), so they are not perfectly consistent with each other.
- U.S. (EPA) and Canadian (NRCan) label values for the same car may not convert exactly into each other because of rounding on each label.
- EPA label kWh/100 mi and MPGe include Level 2 AC charging losses; a dashboard Wh/mi figure usually does not.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert kWh/100 km to miles per kWh?
Divide 62.137 by the kWh/100 km figure, because 100 km = 62.137 miles (1 mile = 1.609344 km). For example, 18.64 kWh/100 km ≈ 3.33 miles per kWh.
What is Le/100 km?
Natural Resources Canada's EnerGuide rating for electric vehicles converts kWh/100 km into gasoline litres equivalent per 100 km (Le/100 km), using the fact that one litre of gasoline contains the energy equivalent to 8.9 kWh.
How do I convert Wh/mi to kWh/100 miles?
Divide by 10: 300 Wh per mile = 0.3 kWh per mile = 30 kWh per 100 miles.
