kWh to Miles and Miles to kWh Converter
Convert an amount of energy into miles of driving, or a distance into the energy it needs.
How it works
Miles = kWh × 100 ÷ (kWh per 100 miles). kWh = miles × (kWh per 100 miles) ÷ 100. MPGe and miles/kWh inputs are converted with EPA's 33.705 kWh per gallon-equivalent.
Worked example: 54 kWh at 27 kWh per 100 miles = 54 × 100 ÷ 27 = 200 miles (the DOE AFDC example).
Assumptions
- Constant efficiency. Real consumption varies with speed, weather and terrain.
- With EPA label figures, kWh means energy from the wall (charging losses included); with dashboard figures it is battery-side energy.
Frequently asked questions
How many miles is 1 kWh?
It depends on efficiency: miles per kWh = 100 ÷ kWh per 100 miles. At 27 kWh per 100 miles (DOE AFDC's example), 1 kWh is about 3.7 miles.
How many kWh do I need for 100 miles?
Exactly your kWh-per-100-miles figure, which appears on the EPA fuel economy label for EVs.
