EV Home Charging Cost per Month and Year
Estimate how much electricity your EV uses at home each month and year, and what it costs at your rate.
How it works
Miles per year = miles per day × driving days per week × 52. Energy = miles × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100. Cost = energy × price. Monthly values are yearly values ÷ 12.
Worked example: 40 miles × 5 days × 52 = 10,400 miles a year. At 30 kWh/100 mi that is 3,120 kWh; × $0.16 = $499.20 a year, or $41.60 a month.
Assumptions
- All charging at home at one flat rate; see the time-of-use calculator for peak/off-peak rates.
- 52 weeks per year; holidays and trips are not modeled.
- Fixed electric bill charges and any charger installation cost are not included.
- All prices are editable estimates. The defaults are placeholders, not current market prices; use your own bill or charger's posted price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate cost per mile for home charging?
DOE AFDC: you need the electricity cost per kWh and the vehicle's kWh per 100 miles. At 10.7 cents per kWh and 27 kWh per 100 miles, the cost is about $0.03 per mile.
Will this match my electric bill?
Only roughly. AFDC notes actual residential costs depend on equipment and on the time of day and length of charging, and some utilities offer time-of-use rates.
