Time-of-Use EV Charging Cost Calculator
If your utility charges different prices by time of day, estimate charging cost from how much you charge off-peak.
How it works
Off-peak energy = total × off-peak share. Cost = off-peak energy × off-peak price + peak energy × peak price. Blended rate = cost ÷ total energy.
Worked example: 300 kWh with 80% off-peak: 240 kWh × $0.10 = $24.00 plus 60 kWh × $0.30 = $18.00, total $42.00, a blended $0.14 per kWh.
Assumptions
- Two price periods only. Real time-of-use plans may have three or more periods, seasonal prices, fixed fees or demand charges.
- Energy entered is what you are billed for (from the outlet); use the monthly cost calculator to estimate it.
- This shows arithmetic only; it does not recommend a rate plan. Check your utility's tariff.
- All prices are editable estimates. The defaults are placeholders, not current market prices; use your own bill or charger's posted price.
Frequently asked questions
What is a time-of-use rate?
A rate where the price of electricity varies by time of day. The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center notes some utilities offer residential time-of-use rates or other rate incentives for EV charging.
What is a blended rate?
The average price you actually paid per kWh across peak and off-peak energy: total cost divided by total kWh.
